There is an old saying that goes, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”. But when I was 16 and working at the rinky-dink car wash a block away from my house it seemed like a silly notion.
Every outfit you chose is a conscious decision about how you present yourself to the world. Your choices matter, and if you’re looking for a way to spruce up your message, then you’ve come to the right place. Not only do custom dress shirts fit better, allowing you to show off your style in true form, but with a little accessorizing they become uniquely yours and yours alone. Here are a few suggestions on how you can dress up your dress shirt and change your wardrobe’s narrative.
For the Minimalist:
Some people are fine with a bevy of accoutrements. They live for watches and rings and tie clips. We’ll get to them in a moment, but for now, let’s look at how dressing down can absolutely be dressing up. As mentioned above, we start with a custom-made shirt. This gives you control over not just the fit, but the style and design of the garment. This means you can add features like a band collar or monogrammed cuffs – or my personal favorite – a patterned/different color inner placket to the mix. A simple inner placket makes going unbuttoned at the top pop that much more. Add to that the effect of slim lines with a well-fitting pant (know your body type), no-show socks, and slip-on loafers and you’ve got an easy-to-pull-off minimalist style.
For the Accessory Junkie:
On the other hand, maybe you’d like to try adding a few bells and whistles to the cut of your gib. Great! What do you have lying around? Does the weather in your area permit scarves? How about suspenders? When paired with a bowtie, the effect is as sharp as the head-turning you’ll be causing. If you’re a watch person, you can customize your dress shirt to allot for the extra .5 inches of fabric needed to let your timepiece peek out ever so slightly. Try coupling your tie clip with a pinhole collar for a dash of regality. Elevate your ankle game with a few pairs of high-end, patterned, socks that add a bold break to the monotony of solid pieces. Clash patterns and make the shirt its own accessory. Why not mix things up a little?
